Performer: David Copperfield

Date: March 30, 1997

Venue: Fox Theatre, Foxwoods Resort Casino

This was a very entertaining show and I distinctly remember how believable the illusions were. At one point David walked into the blades of a giant fan on stage and moments later he was literally standing on the table next to us.  We were seated at least 100 feet away from the stage, if not further.

The Fox Theatre is a great venue and at the time it was the only place to see a “Vegas-style” show in the region.  This was before Mohegan Sun was really a viable competitor and it was amazing to entertainment like this in the middle of the Connecticut woods.

Copperfield has a current residency at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  He also owns the International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts, which houses the world’s largest collection of magic memorabilia, books and artifacts.  It’s in a hidden location (shocking) and only open to “colleagues, fellow magicians, and serious collectors.”

In 2006 he purchased a set of islands in the Bahamas and named it Musha Cay The Islands of Copperfield Bay.  The Web site is painfully slow to load but worth looking at if you’re into island life.  The resort is available for rental and accommodates up to 24 guests.  Rates start at $37.5K per day for a minimum of 4 days!

Copperfield was the first and last large-scale magic show I attended, but when I was a kid I loved watching magicians at birthday parties.  I also remember buying a few magic tricks and learning one or two decent card tricks.

What was the best magic show you ever attended?  Do you have a go-to magic trick that you can still perform?
