When I first started using Foursquare the idea of “checking-in” was a novelty in itself.  I also enjoyed the race to become Mayor of my favorite local venue, but as more people began using the app it became extremely difficult to secure and maintain Mayorships.

I understand the appeal of social currency, but I wasn’t really motivated to earn points, virtual stamps or badges.  Especially after my friend unlocked the player please badge on a business trip.  Needless to say his wife didn’t enjoy reading that on Twitter.

If you’re in a big city you may find location-based apps helpful to navigate the bar scene (Avoidr, RiotVine), but for me the two most appealing features are tips (venue/menu recommendations) and special deals ($).  These provide direct and tangible benefits beyond bragging rights and virtual booty.  If we’re going to see the kind of growth many are predicting for these apps, then we need more real world check-incentives.

Here are a few examples of check-incentives that were recently launched:

Foursquare badge rewards – Unlock the Bravo Real Housewives badge for a chance to win Sephora gift certificates

WeReward – prove your purchase with a photo check-in and earn rewards

Topguest – Loyalty points and travel rewards for check-ins

If you’re still on the sideline mocking people who check-in, what kind of check-incentive would motivate you to get in on the action?
